What is a Self-Exciting Alternator?

It is an alternator that uses a special voltage regulator that doesn't need an ignition wire to activate it.  This type alternator only requires a battery wire hooked to it. The voltage regulator contains circuitry that uses the residual magnetism in the alternator's fields to determine when to turn the alternator on. The regulator does this by sensing the RPM the alternator is turning, when it gets to a certain RPM the voltage regulator "turns on". Typically you start the vehicle, rev the motor slightly then the alternator starts charging. This type of alternator is commonly used on custom cars & trucks, tractors and other non standard applications when wiring is a factor. In choosing this type of alternator you must consider, do you want  to rev your motor slightly to get the alternator to turn on? Also when using the self-exciting alternator on tractors or other slow turning motors, does the engine have enough RPM's to start the alternator charging? This can be overcome by using a smaller pulley or by adding an ignition wire.

Kit No. OW10DN                                              

Converts a Delco 10DN or 20DN to a one wire application. The DN Series was the first and only Delco alternator that used an external regulator.  The One Wire kit includes the regulator and all other circuitry to convert any 10DN or 20DN Series alternator for a one wire installation.  It is not necessary to disassemble the alternator to install this kit.  Perfect for high vibration and/or continuous duty applications.

Kit No. OW10SI                                

This kit converts the Delco 10, 12, 15 and 17SI Alternators to “one wire” applications. This kit will fit any alternator listed in the application chart that calls for a GMA-01 Repair Kit.  It is necessary to remove the rear case of the alternator to install this kit.

Kit No. OWFD40-60                                         

This kit converts the early style 40-60 amp Ford Motorcraft external regulator alternators for a one wire application.  It fits any alternator listed in the application chart that calls for a FDA-01 Repair Kit.  Like all Victory Lap One Wire Kits, this kit includes the regulator and all other circuitry necessary to convert the alternator for a one wire installation.  It is not necessary to disassemble the alternator to install this kit.

Kit No. OW130CS                                             

This kit converts the Delco CS121 or 130 Alternator for a one wire application. It fits any alternator listed in the application chart that calls for a GMA-03 Repair Kit. However, the installation of this kit requires disassembly of the alternator and the de-soldering and re-soldering of some electrical connections.
